Who knew old rags and used clothing could become something fashionably fabulous – and ecologically conscious?
Fashion designer Natalie Chanin did, and she’s built a booming empire on that very premise; turning old rags into stylish pieces everyone can wear.
According to this report in the Mercury News, Chanin has not only launched a brand new label, but also written a book entitled “Alabama Stitch Book.” According to the article, the book is a comprehensive, practical and simple how-to book which will allow you to make your own clothing out of recycled fabrics and a dash of creativity.
I was a bit skeptical myself, especially since I don’t consider myself a very crafty person. However, the article reassured me that even those who can’t sew will benefit from Chanin’s how-to guide.
I’m all for ecologically conscious fashion – kudos to Chanin for realizing that fashion doesn’t have to be about high-priced fabrics or glitzy designs. If you have an old t-shirt or pair of jeans lying around, you can make something amazing.
