Thrift Store Shopping for Dummies

The words “thrift store” might conjure up images of back alley used clothing shops, but in actuality true fashionistas know that thrift stores can often be a treasure trove for fashion steals.

Believe it or not, I have found TONS of stylish clothing (new or barely worn) in thrift stores across my hometown, for a fraction of the cost of what I’d have paid for it retail.

If you know what you’re looking for, you can definitely score some fashion bargains in thrift stores.

First, make a list of everything you’re looking for. Thrift stores can often be very cluttered and disorganized; rather than comb through rack after rack of useless junk, figure out what you’re looking for beforehand. It’ll make your job a lot easier!

If you aren’t sure of your measurements, figure them out. You can use a measuring tape to measure key parts of your body; then, figure out what the measurements are for a few items of clothing that fit you really well. Because a lot of thrift stores don’t allow you to try clothing on, these measurements may prove extremely valuable.

Even though thrift stores are notoriously inexpensive, you shouldn’t buy something just because it’s cheap. Remember step number one? Figure out EXACTLY what you’re looking for, and stick to it!  However, if you find something you truly love (i.e., a designer top, or a fabulous skirt you know you’ll wear everywhere,) go ahead and snap it up. Inventory changes regularly in thrift stores, and what’s there one day may be gone the next!

By learning how to look for the things you want in thrift stores, you can run across some great fashion bargains. Stick to your guns (and your budget,) and you could walk away with an armful of fashion for a fraction of the price.
